Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body.  It is based on 6 principles:

Centering

Flow 

Breathing

Pilates demands intense focus.

 

The way exercises are done is more important than the exercises themselves

Pilates requires total control over every aspect of movement.

 

It teaches you to be in control of your body, not at its mercy. 

 

The main focus of Pilates.

 

All movement in Pilates should start at the center (core muscles - abs, back, glutes, thighs) and flow outward to the limbs.

Physical energy exerted by the core muscles should coordinate movement in the extremities.

 

Flowing movement outwards from a strong core.

The focus is on doing one precise and perfect movement, rather than several improper movements.

 Described as posterior lateral breathing.

 

Pilates attempts to coordinate these special breathing techniques with precise movements for increased balance and strength
